FAQ about the mailinglist

How do I unsubscribe from the list?
Send a mail with the line "unsubscribe mp3encoder" to majordomo@minnie.cs.adfa.edu.au . Note that the line should be in the body of the message and not in the topic.

Can I attach a 100k binary to the list?
No! Don't send any binarys or any other huge files (over 50k or so) to the list! There are over 200 ppl subscribing to the list, so it would be a terrible waste of bandwidth.. If you feel that your file is of interest to the list, put it on a ftp or www site and post a link to the file, so can anyone interested download it.

I don't seem to be subscribed to the list anymore?
If your mail has been down for a while, you might have been removed manually from the list by me. I get about 20 mails/day about mail delivery failures from mail addresses that doesn't work.. I try to remove addresses from the list that has been down for over a week, but I can accidently remove addresses that have been down for a shorter period.
PLEASE UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST IF YOU DON'T WANT MAIL FROM IT. DON'T DEACTIVATE YOUR MAIL ADDRESS. AND PLEASE UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST IF YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ADDRESS WILL STOP WORKING.

A simple mp3-bitstream analyzer: analyzer.tar.gz
The soundclip and encoded files are removed from here since they were outdated. Check out http://www.mp3dev.org/mp3/ if you want test samples.
Learn about perceptual encoding and understand why a simple frequency analysis doesn't tell much about encoding quality... Infact, it's in the nature of mp3 encoding that the frequency spectrum changes, so an mp3-encoder written to keep as much of the frequencys from the original might even add more noise to the output..
A good page that explains the frequency and temporal masking used in mp3.
A very good tutorial about mpeg audio compression. Very useful and describes layer 3 encoding really good. "A tutorial on MPEG/Audio Compression" by Davis Pan.
Another text from Davis Pan, in plain text format..
